KBTC documentary profiles prison mother-infant program

Public television isn’t all travel and cooking shows. The world isn’t that pretty.

On Thursday, November 19 at 8 p.m., KBTC in Tacoma will premiere “Purdy”, a documentary about the Residential Parenting program at the Washington Corrections Center for Women.

With one out of every 17 women incarcerated in the United States entering prison while pregnant, the struggles of bonding with a newborn are monumental.

“Purdy” profiles five women and their children who participate in the program, which allows women with less than three years to serve an opportunity to live with their babies in a designated unit. The program not only allows the mother-infant bond to grow, but provides the new moms with parenting education.

KTBC has posted a short clip previewing the program.

KBTC is Channel 28 and can also be viewed on Comacast Channel 12, Click! Network Channel 3, Wave Broadband Channel 12, DirecTV Channel 28 and Dish Network Channel 8620.

Landslide Wipes Out Garage, Cars

Neighbors woke up to what they thought was a freight train rumbling through their street at 2 AM. The landslide took out a garage, cars and still threatens several homes.

Look above the garage in the photo - you can see where it gave way. Neighbors blame heavy rain and loose ground. The owner blames a broken water pipe.

Early morning slide wipes out garage

A small landslide around 2 a.m. this morning took out a garage attached to a house in the 8500 block of 29th Court NW in Gig Harbor.

Two cars in the garage were destroyed but there were no other reports of damage or injuries.

The area is secluded from wind and according to emergency responders, it was not raining at the time of the slide.

High winds and heavy rain are predicted for the next few days throughout the Puget Sound area, so more slides are possible.

SDOT to rehearse new snow plan today

Despite the rainy weather, you might see snow plows on your neighborhood streets today.

Starting at 3 p.m. SDOT will conduct a dress rehearsal of its new snow-fighting plan by deploying its snow response fleet on city streets. Four tanker trucks will travel major arterial streets throughout the city, pre-treating the pavement with what would be a salt brine mixture (today it will be water) to keep snow and ice from accumulating.
