Stage 1 burn ban back for Pierce County

Stage 1 burn ban back for Pierce County

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency has issued a Stage 1 burn ban for Pierce County, starting at 12:00 p.m. today.

The ban will remain in effect until further notice.

Puget Sound Clean Air says: "High pressure has been building over the Puget Sound region, resulting in very cold and stagnant weather conditions. Air pollution is building up in Pierce County, especially in communities where residential wood burning is common. With stagnant conditions expected to continue through tomorrow, pollution levels could reach the "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" category at some locations."

Increased tolls in our future

Increased tolls in our future

Ready or not, there will be a toll increase on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.  How much is the question.  Thanks to our State legislative leadership and to the good citizens of the greater Gig Harbor area who voiced their opinion two years ago, we dodged the bullet in 2010.  But a planned toll increase has been in the cards since the bridge opened (and long before) despite the difficulties we are all facing with the current economy.

It’s time to mark your calendars for a very important upcoming meeting on February 8th when the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Citizen Advisory Committee will hear public comment regarding a proposal to likely raise the toll on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge to as high as $5, regardless if you have a Good to Go pass or not.

This meeting and open house on the 8th is not a time to harass or belittle state employees, our elected officials or the Citizens Advisory Committee.  Rather it is a time for us to come together once again as a community to learn, dialogue and be problem solvers with our leaders.

Remember two years ago, almost to the day, when Gig Harbor rose up as a community and just said NO?

News Tribune: County overwhelms residents with emergency text messages during storm

Imagine getting the same text message 30 times in one day.

It happed Tuesday to about 1,500 Pierce County residents who get updates from the county's emergency management system.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports the message asked residents to report storm damage so the state can ask for federal money.

Everbridge, the company that provides the system is working on the problem.

The county and Everbridge are discussing reimbursing people who pay per text message.

WSP seeking additional witnesses in Monday morning crash on Highway 16

WSP seeking additional witnesses in Monday morning crash on Highway 16

The Washington State Patrol is seeking additional witnesses in an early Monday crash that killed one woman and injured two others, including a WSP trooper.

The five-vehicle crash occurred Monday morning around 5 a.m. near the Burnham Drive overpass on Highway 16.

A state trooper was parked on the right shoulder at the scene of prior collisions that were clear of the roadway. In the next three minutes, a westbound passenger car crashed off the right side of the highway and a westbound motorcyclist went down on the roadway. Another driver stopped behind the trooper vehicle on the shoulder to help. A westbound pickup truck traveled onto the shoulder and struck the rear of the good samaritan’s vehicle, forcing it ahead into the trooper, samaritan, the motorcycle operator, and the patrol car. The trooper and motorcyclist were injured and the person trying to help was killed.

WSP ID's woman killed in large Highway 16 crash as an Everett woman

The Washington State Patrol has identified the woman that was killed when hit by another vehicle during a five-vehicle crash on Highway 16 Monday morning near Gig Harbor as an Everett woman.

WSP officials said on Monday night that the victim was 44-year-old Regina Mills of Everett. She was killed at around 5 a.m. when she was helping a motorcyclist who had spun out when she was hit by a pickup that had lost control on the black ice that was coating the highway. A WSP trooper was also hit by a car while helping drivers at the crash scene, near Burnham Drive. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The Kitsap Sun reports that Mills was a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy, based on the USS Nimitz (which will be moved to its new home in Everett in a couple of months). The Sun said that Mills was the first woman in Navy history to be named an aircraft handling officer on a carrier.
