Mother's Day means more sun, continues through start of work week

Mother's Day means more sun, continues through start of work week

Happy Mother's Day!

We are in for some wonderful weather for getting outside.

Plan on sunny skies today with highs in the mid-70s to low-80s in many spots.  The warmest areas will be in the south Sound.

The strong ridge of high pressure will stay locked in for Monday with highs rising a few degrees.

Even Tuesday is looking mostly sunny with a few high clouds toward the end of the day.  It isn't until late Wednesday that the ridge breaks down enough to allow a stronger onshore flow to bring us more clouds and cooler temps.  By Thursday morning we could even have some areas of mist.

Wine and Food Festival tickets now on sale

The saying goes – ‘The early bird gets the worm’ – and in the case of the Gig Harbor Wine and Food Festival organizers say that’s the truth.

Early bird tickets for the 3rd annual event are on sale now and buyers not only get a discount but also first shot at signing up for a number of classes being offered this year.

You can buy your tickets online. June 15 is the cut off for folks to get a $10 discount – which means a total of $65 for the day-long event.

“This is the first year we’ve had online sign-ups for classes. If people want to make sure they get to attend their favorite classes, they should sign up as early as possible,” Victoria Trimmer, event director for the festival said in a statement.

Last year the event sold out and Trimmer expects to see the same thing happen this time around.

The festival is July 14 on the grounds of the Harbor History Museum.

You can learn more about the festivities online.

PSE gas rates to go up on Monday

PSE gas rates to go up on Monday

Those who get natural gas service from Puget Sound Energy will starting paying a bit more for the service.

The state Utilities and Transportation Commission approved PSE's request for a 1.3 percent increase in natural gas rates on Monday. The new rates will take effect next Monday, May 14.

The new rates would see the average PSE customer see their bill go up by just over a dollar to around $89 a month. In all, PSE hopes to raise $32 million a year from the increase in natural gas rates from its entire service area.

PSE serves more than 1 million electric customers and 750,000 natural gas customers in 11 counties, with half of its total customers in King County.  PSE also serves King County customers from a number of service, fleet and operations centers in Bellevue, Bothell, Kent, Redmond, Enumclaw, and Renton. It serves Seattle with only natural gas service.

Appreciate a teacher this week

Appreciate a teacher this week

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

Today kicks off that designated week each year when those who are or were students work together to show their appreciation for the teachers that shaped them.

No matter your age, we bet you can think of at least one teacher you had along the way who meant something special to you.

Need some ideas for how to thank the special teacher in your life? PTA.org has some great suggestions.

What to go above and beyond? How about a shout-out from the KOMO Communities team? Email us with a sentence or two about what makes your teacher so special, and where they teach (feel free to include a photo if you like), and we'll post your answers all week long.

We'll kick things off: I'm reminded of Stadium High School's French teacher every time I check my bank account or student loan balance. Nearly a decade later, and Mr. Kasner is still the answer to all of my "favorite teacher" security questions.
